Law Society Council and Committee Meetings Attended 2011-2012

Council meetings:

  • 5 October, 9 November, 14 December, 8 February, 26 March, 16 May, 5 July. 
  • Law Society AGM on 5 July..

Wales committee:

  • I chair this committee.
  • 3 October, 6 December, 1 March, 14 June.

RAB Education and Training committee:

  • 7 September, 7 December, 9 February, 28 June.
  • I missed the meeting on 12 April, as I was on annual leave at the time.

Other attendances and activities

  • I held meetings with Lowri Morgan at Capital Tower on 4 July, 9 September, 14 November, 25 January, 13 February, 23 May. 
  • I attended the National Eisteddfod at Wrexham on 4 August.
  • I attended a meeting of a committee of the Council Membership Committee to discuss the boundaries of Welsh constituencies on the Law Society council on 9 September.
  • I wrote articles for the October, December June and August issues of Legal News.
  • I attended the Legal Wales conference at Cardiff on 7 October.
  • I was contacted by HMCTS and asked to contribute to the planning of the itinerary of the visit to Cardiff by Judge Magdalena Kociorska from Poland.  I arranged for her to attend the Confederation’s Civil Updates day on 12 October, took her on a short tour of South Wales on 16 October and arranged for her to visit Cardiff Law School on 18 October.
  • I chaired the Confederation of South Wales Law Societies’ Civil Updates Day at the University of Glamorgan on 12 October.
  • I attended the Legal Aid Roadshow at Capital Tower on 20 October.
  • I attended the Law Society’s Committee Chairs meetings at Chancery Lane on 25 October.
  • I attended the DPP’s presentation on Digital Working at Capital Tower on 3 November.
  • I attended the Law Society’s Diversity and Inclusion Event at Capital Tower on 8 December.
  • I attended the Welsh Government’s presentation on the Cardiff City region and the City of London Working Together on 16 December.
  • I attended the ACCA St David’s Day business breakfast on 1 March.
  • I spoke at and attended the SRA’s focus group events on whether to abolish the minimum salary for trainee solicitors at the Marriott Hotel on 7 March and 8 March.
  • I met Lowri Morgan and Malcolm Davies of the Welsh Government about what the Welsh Government can do and is prepared to do to assist the private legal sector in Wales on 12 March.
  • I attended a meeting of the West Wales Law Society at Carmarthen on 29 March.
  • I attended a meeting between the Law Society and Gwynedd Law Society at Bangor on 2 April.
  • I attended a dinner with the president of the Law Society at the St David’s Hotel on 4 April.
  • I arranged for John Wotton, the president of the Law Society to visit Cardiff Law School on 5 April.
  • I attended the Legal Education and Training Review’s focus group on Skills and Mobility and Different Provision in Wales at Capital Tower on 26 April.
  • I attended the Cardiff Law Society annual dinner on 27 April.
  • I nominated participants for and attended the Law Society’s roundtable event on legal education and training at Capital Tower on 9 May.
  • I attended the joint Legal Services Board, Cardiff Law School and Wales Governance Centre seminar on Legal Education and Training: Welsh Dimension on 10 May.
  • I attended the launch of the University of Glamorgan’s Centre for Financial and Professional Services at Cardiff Castle on 14 May.
  • I attended the Cardiff Law Society’s AGM on 17 May.
  • I attended the symposium on The Separate Welsh Jurisdiction at Capital Tower on 8 June.
  • I attended the Law Society’s Committee Chairs meeting at Chancery Lane on 12 June.
  • I attended the meeting of the Law Society’s Membership Board as an observer when it means at Capital Tower on the morning on 14 June.
  • I gave a presentation on Legal Education and Training: the Welsh Dimension to the Legal Education and Training Review’s Consultation Steering Panel on 28 June.

Cardiff Law Society Meetings Attended 2011-2012

Council meetings:

  • 12 September. 3 October, 7 November, 5 December, 6 February, 5 March, 17 May (AGM), 11 June.
  • I missed the meeting on 9 January through illness.  I missed the meeting on 2 April as I was returning from the meeting in Bangor.  I missed the meeting on 14 May as I was attending the launch of the University of Glamorgan’s Centre for Financial and Professional Services.  I missed the meeting on 2 July due to family commitments.

Finance & Policy committee meetings:

  • 17 August, 22 February, 21 March, 18 April. 
  • I missed the meetings in September, October, November, December January and June because of work commitments.  I missed the meeting in May as I was attending a Law Society council meeting.

Regulatory Issues Sub-committee meetings:

  • No meetings were scheduled. 

Other Meetings Attended 2011-2012

Confederation of South Wales Law Society meetings:

  • 1 February (AGM).
  •  I missed the meetings in September, November and December, when I was at Chancery Lane, the January meeting through illness and the March meeting as I was attending the SRA focus group on the trainees’ minimum salary.  There were no meetings in October or April.  I forgot to go to the meeting on 2 May.  I missed the meeting in July as I was in London for a council meeting

Associated Law Societies of Wales meetings:

  • No meetings were scheduled.
