Howells - Having witnessed significant growth in the last few years, law firm Howells has promoted two of its solicitors to the role of director. Rhidian Hobbs heads up the firm’s commercial property department and has played a key role in expanding this area of work. Laith Khatib works in the firm’s private client department, which deals with wills, trusts and estates. His practice focuses on high value trusts and estates, and litigation in those areas. Capital Law - Christopher Agius has been appointed as head of banking at Cardiff’s Capital Law. Chris is a commercial property lawyer specialising in acting for banks in a separate representation capacity, and borrowers who need to be guided through the due diligence requirements of their funder. He joins Capital Law form Harrison Clark Rickerbys in Cheltenham where he was head of real estate finance. More here.
West Wales - JCP Solicitors has announced it will merge with Carmarthen–based Pritchard Edwards in October to create a 150-strong team with offices in Carmarthen, Swansea, Fishguard, Haverfordwest, St Davids and Cardiff. Hayley Davies, partner and chief executive of JCP Solicitors, said: "This is our fourth merger in West Wales and, once again, we are delighted with the continuing growth and development of our legal services in the region. Convey Law - Gareth Richards, Head of Legal Practice at Newport based conveyancing specialists, Convey Law, joined the company 11 years ago as a Conveyancing Assistant, qualified as a Licensed Conveyancer and became a Legal Director at the business in 2012. Frances Edwards - Frances Edwards became the 51st President of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) at a ceremony in Cardiff City Hall on Friday, 11 July. Originally from Newport, Frances works for Caerphilly-based firm Caswell Jones as a legal aid lawyer specialising in family law and is the first female President of CILEx from the principality. Darwin Gray - Commercial law firm Darwin Gray has appointed as partner the former head of property dispute resolution and social housing at Hugh James, Neil Morgan. Neil has more than 20 years' experience and expertise in property disputes and housing law and has built up a reputation and client base among property professionals, house builders, developers, housing associations and local government. Gordon Dadds - continuing its development as a niche law firm in the Welsh market, Kelly Lewis and Veena Velani have joined the Cardiff branch of the London based Gordon Dadds as solicitor and paralegal respectively. Blake Morgan - confining the names of Morgan Cole and Blake Lapthorn to history, the merger of the 2 firms as Blake Morgan was formalised on 1 July 2014. Long-standing Morgan Cole partner, Emyr Lewis, takes up the reins as senior partner for the Wales offices. Rhys Rowlands - Former Cardiff Crown Court circuit judge Rhys Rowlands has been appointed as the new senior judge for north Wales, taking over from Judge Merfyn Hughes QC, who recently retired. Born in Bangor and an alumnus of University College London and Cardiff University, HHJ Rowlands will work across north Wales. Read more here.
Hopkins Law - established in 2006 and employing 20 staff, Hopkins Law has relocated its new headquarters to 20 Windsor Place in Cardiff city centre. Capital Law - Welsh Government Business Minister Edwina Hart has announced the make-up of an independent advisory panel tasked with building the case for a Development Bank for Wales. The panel, chaired by Professor Dylan Jones-Evans and which includes the managing partner of Cardiff based Capital Law, Chris Nott, will explore the potential mission, role and operations that a development bank could undertake. It will also explore the legal and state aid framework required to establish and operate such an organisation. Read more here.

Hugh James - Emma Burns, head of employment at Hugh James Solicitors, has taken up a leading role with one of the major cancer charities in Wales. Eversheds – Kathryn Roberts has been appointed the new senior partner at Eversheds’ Cardiff Office. Kathryn joined the firm in 1996 as a professional negligence lawyer and rose through the ranks to head up the business - the first woman to do so. More here.

Civitas Law - Keith Bush has been appointed Queen’s Counsel honoris causa “for his contribution to the development of the National Assembly for Wales as a legislature, as well as contributing to the development of devolved law and to the discussion and study of wider Welsh legal issues.” Keith was called to the bar in 1977, worked as a legal adviser to the Welsh Government, then the National Assembly and is the current director of the Legal Wales Foundation which organises the annual Legal Wales Conference.
